Many of us perceive Artificial Intelligence (AI) as an advanced topic within computer science, seemingly distant from the realm of ordinary individuals. There's a prevalent belief that AI is a recent phenomenon. However, the term "Artificial Intelligence" was coined, and the field officially established, during the Dartmouth Conference in 1956. At that time, researchers were optimistic about the potential for creating intelligent machines ! Their vision doesn't appear lofty when we observe the current state of affairs. The rapid advancements and widespread integration of artificial intelligence into various aspects of our daily lives have turned once visionary ideas into tangible and impactful realities

Despite our perceived disconnect from AI, its influence permeates our daily lives. Consider a scenario where, although I lack knowledge of chess, I can engage in a match against any Grandmaster. The trick lies in playing against two Grandmasters simultaneously and merely replicating their moves, letting them compete against each other. This form of chess playing is inherently "artificial" since I lack the understanding of the game itself.

A notable instance of AI's prowess is Deep Blue, a supercomputer developed by IBM. In a highly anticipated rematch against Garry Kasparov in 1997, Deep Blue emerged victorious with a score of 3.5-2.5. This marked the first time a reigning world champion lost a match to a computer under standard chess tournament time controls.

Today, even on standard personal computers or smartphones, chess engines like Stockfish and AlphaZero surpass the playing strength of the strongest human grandmasters. These engines analyze positions with incredible depth and accuracy, serving as invaluable tools for both professionals and enthusiasts. 

The success of AI in chess is rooted in its ability to employ powerful algorithms and brute-force calculations, evaluating millions of positions per second.AI, as we witness it today, relies on substantial computing power and vast amounts of data for training. So, what precisely is artificial intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence refers to the development of computer systems capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. These tasks encompass learning, reasoning, problem-solving, perception, language understanding, and decision-making. The goal of AI is to create machines or software that can mimic aspects of human intelligence, enabling them to autonomously perform specific functions. It's crucial to note that not everything falls under the umbrella of AI; many traditional computer programs operate based on predefined rules without the adaptive and learning capabilities characteristic of AI.

Much like one doesn't need to comprehend the science behind internal combustion engines to drive a car, AI has integrated into our lives without our conscious awareness. It operates behind the scenes, influencing various aspects of our daily routines and interactions.AI has seamlessly woven itself into the fabric of our daily existence, often working discreetly in the background. The following examples shed light on how AI subtly influences our lives, frequently without individuals realizing it:

  • Search Engines: AI algorithms, such as Google's, intricately analyze user queries, predict intent, and furnish relevant search results.
  • Social Media Content Sorting: Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter employ AI algorithms to curate and prioritize content in users' feeds based on preferences and engagement history.
  • Email Filters: AI aids email providers in filtering spam, categorizing emails, and prioritizing messages based on user behavior.
  • Voice Assistants: Virtual assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant utilize natural language processing and AI to comprehend and respond to voice commands.
  • Smartphones: AI functionalities such as facial recognition, predictive text, and autocorrect enhance user experience in smartphones.
  • Online Shopping Recommendations: E-commerce platforms utilize recommendation algorithms, suggesting products based on browsing and purchase history.
  • Credit Scoring: Financial institutions leverage AI algorithms to assess credit scores, enhancing accuracy through comprehensive factor evaluation.
  • Navigation Apps: AI-driven apps like Google Maps analyze traffic patterns, offering real-time navigation recommendations.
  • Streaming Services Recommendations: Platforms like Netflix and Spotify employ AI to recommend movies, TV shows, and music based on user preferences.

  • Medical Diagnostics: AI is instrumental in medical imaging for the detection of abnormalities in X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans.
  • Weather Forecasting: Meteorological models leverage AI to process vast amounts of data, providing more accurate weather predictions.

How many of these are you utilizing? I'm confident it's nearly all! These examples showcase the pervasive impact of AI on our daily lives, contributing to efficiency, personalization, and improved decision-making across diverse domains. Whether one is a proponent of AI or not, its presence is undeniable. 

Are the points mentioned above satisfactory? It's a subjective matter. I hold the view that predictive text undermines our spelling proficiency, and auto-suggestions can foster a sense of complacency—similar to the way I find myself unable to navigate without GPS while driving. I've noticed an excessive dependence on ChatGPT for my research endeavours.

As computer scientist Alan Kay aptly puts it, "Some people worry that artificial intelligence will make us feel inferior, but then, anybody in his right mind should have an inferiority complex every time he looks at a flower." -  perhaps suggesting that this pales in comparison to the complexity of the human mind and nature!
